The high of a packed, singing crowd at Madeiras still hasn’t faded, even with the rain hammering down.
It’s Monday, and while this is usually my “Sunday” recovery day, the proximity of AntFest 53 means the gears have to shift early this week.
The Focus
- Audience Growth: Dispatching newsletters for Marshall One regarding AntFest53 (24 April) and for The DeadBeats to drive momentum for our return to Corner Rock Bar in Durbanville (9 May).
- Educational Outreach: Drafting the formal proposal for the Calling Us Home school tour to the Swartland.
- Technical Sync: Meeting tonight for a final AntFest rehearsal and technical walkthrough ahead of Friday’s showcase.
The Insight
I feel that true success is rarely about the single event; it is about the “return.” Securing a residency through another quarter (or a year or whatever) at a venue partner happens because you show up and actually build a rapport with that room and that venue management (assuming venue management actually shows an interest in doing so).
In my view, the ideal situation is one where a genuine relationship is built between partners to extend our activity beyond a one-off booking. When we establish that trust, it allows us to shift our mindset. We stop stressing over just the “upcoming date” and instead start viewing the work as a strategic roadmap for the next quarter or even the full year.
Whether you are performing or pitching a project to schools, the goal is to move past the introductions and start building a permanent presence. Growth is a compound interest game, and it only works when you have the space to think long-term.
The Sign-off
Here’s to a week of turning one-off wins into long-term habits. Let’s get to work.
This post is part of an effort to commit to a daily ritual: An (almost) daily reflection designed as both a mental health exercise and a tool for indirect accountability. By spending a few minutes each morning carving out these pillars, I’m creating a personal record of where the energy goes and what’s actually keeping me busy. The goal is to build a reflection journal I can look back on to see which ideas grew and which ones fell away—while hopefully providing a few lessons and talking points for those of you navigating your own creative paths.
